Hair is lifeless and needs no protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation because hair shaft carcinogenesis is not feasible; and although damaged hair can be removed and replaced by new growth.

Much like natural fiber, natural unprocessed human hair undergoes photoyellowing, a chemical process by which wool, cotton, or silk, as well as human hair discolor after sunlight exposure.

Human hair contains three melanin pigments. The first two, eumelanin and pheomelanin, account for the brown and red hues found in hair respectively. The third pigment, oxymelanin, is found after unprocessed hair has been exposed to sunlight. This melanin reduces the cosmetic value of the hair as well as affecting hair dye and perm.

Hair lipids wrap the hair shaft conferring gloss and manageability, but if they are absent, hair is vulnerable to static electricity, breaks with combing abrasion, and looks frizzy.

In order to comprehend Hair photoaging, it is essential first to understand interaction between UV radiation with the hair proteins. Hair has an outer cuticle that provides protection for the inner cortex, which is composed of fibrillar proteins. These proteins are in charge of the strength of the hair shaft. At the same time, melanin pigments are embedded in a protein matrix in the cortex. In this way, sunlight damages hair by physically making the shaft weak. Simultaneously, sunlight fosters oxymelanin production, resulting in pigment reduction and lightening of hair color.

As regards topical exogenous hair photoprotection, it has not been different from skin photoprotection. happinesslifetime.com Hair care products such as instant conditioners, styling gels, and hair sprays were added UV-B and UV-A sunscreens. However, this topical approach failed in creating an even film that covers the whole surface area of every hair on the head. Moreover, it is impossible because the total surface area of hair on a human head is enormous. It would also be ideal that sunscreen sticks to the hair cuticle wrapping each hair in thickness, but without making the hair look oily.

Sunlight exposure leads to lightening of the hair color and, eventually, fiber damage. However, it has been proven that unpigmented hair is more vulnerable to UV damage than pigmented hair, indicating that color granules provide some kind of hair photoprotection from oxidative damage.

If natural pigments provide hair photoprotection, then deposition of synthetic pigments on the cuticle and within the cortex through hair dyes may protect hair shaft. There are two kinds of hair dyes: semipermanent and permanent.

Semi-permanent hair dyes are made of a combination of dyes in order to arrive at the final desired color. These are left on the hair for 25 minutes approximately. Although dyeing damage hair fibers, the damage is outbalanced by antioxidant effect of the color deposited on and in the hair shaft as the hair is exposed to UV radiation. The darker the hair dye color, the more hair photoprotection provided.

Permanent hair dyes penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Although they act as hair photoprotection agents as well, they cause more damage as a result of the hydrogen peroxide and ammonia employed to make chemicals penetrate into the hair shaft. In spite of producing more cuticle and hair shaft structure damage, alkaline dyes provide better hair photoprotection since they reduce hair fiber protein damage, acting as passive photo filters.

As well as hair dyes, there are other hair products that can act as hair photoprotection agents, among which we found shampoos, instant conditioners, deep conditioners, and hairstyling products. Some shampoos intended for dyed hair include sunscreens. They are designed to extend the color of dyed hair. However, UV protection from shampoos is rather challenging since the surfactant should be washed completely before styling.

On the other hand, conditioners can achieve a better deposition of sunscreen on the hair shaft. Although not as effective as deep conditioners, which remain on the hair for 15 to 30 minutes; instant conditioners are applied after shampoos and washed before towel drying. In fact, the contact time of the conditioners containing sunscreen with the hair establishes the level of hair photoprotection. The longer, the better.

Probably the best UV protection products are styling products that are administered after hair drying and among which are blow-drying conditioners, styling gels, and hair sprays. Blow-drying conditioners are applied through massaging the wet hair before drying. Styling gels may not provide as much protection when applied only to certain areas of the hair, such as hair shaft roots or tips. Hair sprays have similar hair photoprotection effect since they are applied as a narrow film to a finished hairstyle.

Although a myriad of UV protection products exist for hair photoprotection, the best way of UV protection would still be the use of hats, scarves, or umbrellas.

How do you feel about your physical appearance in relation to your own self-esteem? If you have low self-esteem your physical appearance may be the last thing on your mind or maybe you could care less about...

what others may think
what others may say
when you're home alone
when you're out in public

If you're afflicted with low self-esteem you may not care what others think or see anyway, but your self-esteem shows through even when you think no one's looking. Self esteem refers to the concept of your own self appraisal, in other words, what does your own self-worth look like?

If you're an individual who struggles with self-esteem issues in regards to your physical appearance, you are not alone and following are just a few simple ways you may build your self-esteem in a few every day steps.

Boost your self-esteem by caring about your physical appearance:

Bathing: Some people may think that bathing is not an essential part of self-esteem and that just putting on clean clothes will do the trick. Not so, because you are either wearing clothes that breaths (lets out odors) or you're wearing clothes that hold your sweat in (retains moisture) making matters worse. Bathing on a regular basis is a must to building your self-esteem, besides, isn't it a great feeling to wash off all those dead skin cells to allow the new ones to grow in a healthy manner?
Hair Care: Whether it's stylish or just plain Jane or average Joe, it's all the same. Hair care is a must for self-esteem boosting. But why? Because it's you in the mirror, and it's you that others will see and/or smell. Oily, grungy-looking hair is a big turn off to just about anyone, and here's the worst of dirty hair. You don't smell it because you walk forward and away from it, others behind you do. Respect yourself, wash it, care for it, and it will respond with pleasant looks. Your hair speaks wonders without words.
Clothing: You don't have to be a fashion buff nor wear expensive clothing to boost your self-esteem, it's all in the way you care for your clothing. Care for your clothing reveals the value you place on yourself. Plan ahead and do your laundry on a regular basis. You can even boost your self-esteem in those unpredictable emergencies by having an extra pair of socks, any type of undergarments, and an extra change of clothing stashed away for emergency use.
Sleep: If you have a tendency to neglect your required beauty sleep, beware; because one day you'll wake up, look in the mirror and SURPRISE! Those dark circles have appeared out of nowhere. Yes, we joke about getting our beauty sleep, but it's a fact that getting enough restful night's sleep can do wonders for your appearance. Don't attempt to read those articles, newspapers, or do homework in bed, you'll either have nightmares or those news stories will cause restless sleep. Instead use a peaceful positive affirmation as you close your eyes to sleep.

So does personal care have anything to do with your self-esteem? It certainly does!

Notice those individuals with healthy self-esteem and you'll see them practicing these simple every day steps. So, if you're one of those individuals who struggles with low self-esteem, follow these basic guidelines and relay your self-esteem level via your physical appearance. These steps will surely boost your self-esteem level by leaps and bounds.

So what if nobody is coming over, or even that you're just home alone. These are the best times to practice these self-esteem boosters, because you are important. You matter as a human being and as a member of society.

When more than a few strands of hair start to fall out on a regular basis, there is a definite cause for concern, as individuals quickly scramble to locate the source of their hair loss problem. Around 90% of hair on most scalps is undergoing a two-to six-year growth period (known as the anagen stage), where the other 10% enjoys a two- to three-month resting phase (referred to as telogen).

After a period of time - the resting hair begins to shed. On the average, most people shed between 50 and 150 hairs on a daily basis, which is normal. This allows the hair to undergo another growth stage, where a new hair emerges from the same follicle. The typical rate of growth for new hair is about ½ inch per month.

In cases of hair loss, the rate of shedding is exceeding the rate of regrowth, which may or may not become a permanent situation. New hair may become thinner than the hair shed or start to come out in patches, eventually inching its way closer to baldness. When heredity is the driving force behind hair loss, there is rarely much one can do, whereas the hair loss caused by other factors is usually treatable.

Some of the main types of hair loss include androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata. Androgenetic alopecia is brought on by heredity and is mostly common among men. Usually, a family history of the condition is seen on either side of the family, which greatly increases the chances of balding. Hereditary factors also affect the age when hair loss begins; the intensity; speed; and overall pattern.

With alopecia areata, the cause is unknown, but is categorized as an autoimmune disease. Family history also affects the results of this condition, as well as numerous outside triggers, such as viruses. Usually, alopecia areata causes one to lose and regrow their hair a number of times, but it typically always grows back. While androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata are common causes of losing hair, there are plenty of other factors that cause temporary or permanent hair loss:

(1) Disease: Those who suffer from diabetes, lupus, and thyroid disorders may experience hair loss.

(2) Poor Dietary Habits: When you follow a diet lacking in protein, iron, and other vital nutrients, your poor eating habits may lead to a loss in hair. Also, those who indulge in fad diets, crash dieting, or eating disorders suffer hair losing.

(3) Medication and Medical Treatments: There are certain drugs that various patients (depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, gout, and arthritis) take that may cause hair loss in some. Taking birth control pills could also cause the same effect. Medical treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, may cause hair to fall out. Usually, once treatment stops - the hair starts to regrow.

(4) Childbirth: In a woman, the hormonal shift she may experience is known to cause increased hair to fall out several months after giving birth to a child.

(5) Poor Hair Care Habits: Excessive dying, bleaching, straightening or perming of the hair causes damage and increased breakage. Tight hairstyling or excessive changes to the hair also disrupts normal regrowth patterns.

(6) Scalp Infection: Some hair loss victims are simply suffering from a scalp infection, which is often caused by a fungal infection. Usually, a topical solution clears up the condition.

Is it an issue related to confidence? It is a self-esteem problem? Does envy have a part to play in it? What is wrong with your real hair? Why do you want to hide your natural locks? When I was in middle and high school, in the late 80' and early 90's, I remember girls who were being made fun of because they wore weaves. Nowadays, it seems as if they are part of our society.

What has happened?! When did the weave, or the wig, or the extensions, or whatever you can call them, get voted as something that is O.K? I know some ladies who think they look better wearing a wig. They even think that men prefer a women with long flowing weave. The fact of the matter is, men actually realize that the women with the weave, are just seeking more attention, and actually are much easier. The hair is like a pair of heels, a physical accessory which triggers a physical response. No man has ever looked at a weave and thought, "she must be smart."

True love comes from inner beauty, personality, and natural physical attraction. Yes, a man would have sex with that girl who is wearing the hair she bought, but we love the one who is comfortable with herself. Her true self. The woman who is confident, intelligent, beautiful, and funny. Not the one, who for some reason, believes that she looks better while wearing a wig.

Am I wrong?
