In the beauty advice industry, there are certain pieces of advice that just don't seem to go away, regardless of whether or not they're true. One beauty advice columnist says something that seems to make sense, and then everyone else takes this idea and runs with it. This is a good way to generate beauty advice copy, but it's not always good for the ordinary person who is just trying to spruce up their look. So before you start taking anyone's hair care advice, be aware of these common myths. None of them are true, so following this advice is just a waste of time and money.

Myth: A cold-water rinse tames frizz and makes hair shiny.

Fact: Using a little bit of cold water right at the end of the shower can temporarily contribute to shininess and frizz reduction, but only if you know the proper ways to dry your hair. If you use a blow drier or dry your hair roughly with a towel, it will eliminate all of the effects of the cold water.

Myth: Frequent brushing is good for hair.

Fact: Brushing is at best a temporary fix-up for your hair. In the long run, however, frequent brushing can actually cause damage, especially if the brush is made of a particularly abrasive material such as plastic or metal. If you like to brush frequently, use a gentle brush, and brush only enough to keep your hair straight and well managed.

Myth: Trimming frequently speeds hair growth.

Fact: Hair growth has nothing to do with what happens at the tips of the hair. It comes from the roots only. The hair itself is basically dead cells that that are completely removed from the body's growth processes. A frequent trim can definitely help eliminate split ends, but hair growth comes from how healthy you are, how well you treat your scalp, and the conditioning treatments that you use.

Myth: Hair can develop shampoo immunity:

Fact: Many hair care advice columnists advise to change shampoos on a regular basis. This is a good thing to do, but the reasons that some people give are just plain wrong. It's not that your hair becomes immune to a certain product. It's that the chemicals in the shampoo gradually build up and create a residue. Switching shampoos can clear away this residue and start the process fresh.

Myth: Certain hair treatments during pregnancy are dangerous.

Fact: There's no doubt that one should use caution when considering hair treatments during pregnancy, but it's best not to take advice from non-medical professionals with regard to these things. If you're not sure whether something is bad to do when you're pregnant, talk to your doctor. Don't listen to anyone else's advice.

Myth: Scalp massage can stimulate hair growth.

Fact: Scalp massage is great for decreasing stress and distributing natural oils throughout your hair, but it doesn't speed hair growth. It will definitely make your hair follicles more healthy, which is a good thing, but hair growth comes from unrelated processes within the body.
