Coming from a salon owner who is concerned about healthy hair care, I appreciate whenever a client can provides me a five year chemical history on their hair. Prior to putting any chemical in a new client's hair it is critical to evaluate which chemical has already been on their hair. Generally if the client's hair is long, I would be required to consider going back 5 years. Should I apply color to my new client without knowing what chemical she has on her hair, it can cause damage.
I would have to take each level into consideration. I would have to choose my desire strategy in order to obtain good results. It's possible that I will have to apply different color formulas and different levels of developers. Use protection where needed. Maybe peroxide color on roots and semi on ends. Make sense?
Ok, let me try to explain why we have to go down the hair shaft.
1. 3 inches of completely new growth---virgin
2. 2 inches down---relaxer
3. 2 more inches lower---relaxer,color, & highlights
each length has a different porosity level.
Medication as well as surgical treatments also plays a major role in your hair.
So therefor be sure to keep a record on this your medical information as well.
I once had a client that was very adamant about not having chemical in her hair what so ever. Her hair was healthy, roots down to 4 inches and the rest was shot, it was so damaged. I felt so bad, because I practically exclaimed exactly what I was thinking, that being "You are not revealing the truth." Before doing so, I quickly thought and questioned if she was under anesthesia 2-3 years ago. The woman then explained to me that she had a brain tumor and under anesthesia for 5 hours. Consequently that was it, when I gave her a thermal reconditioning that day I needed to treat the ends as if there were bleached or relaxed.
So keep in mind, previous chemical in hair, surgery as well as medication ( prescribed and recreational drugs) also play an important role.
