Nowadays most shampoos advertisements claim to be able to add shine to your hair. The truth is only silica-based shampoos are actually formulated to add luster to dull hair. However, you need to be extra careful while using these shampoos as they can other hair-related problems.

Let's begin by understanding why hair that is otherwise healthy, starts looking dull and lifeless. When the cuticle refuses to lie flat it makes the texture of the hair rough and uneven. This is what causes the dullness. The quickest way to fix the problem is to rinse your hair in cold water once you've finished washing it. This helps to make the cuticle lie flat. It also prevents hair damage.

Another factor that makes your hair lose its shine is build-up of hair products, smoke or dirt. Detergent-based shampoos usually help in removing this pile of build-up but they are otherwise harsh on the hair. A home remedy that really adds shine to your hair is to use cider vinegar as the last rinse after a shampoo. Once you've washed and conditioned your hair, pour a mixture of 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar and 12 oz. of water as a finishing rinse. Now rinse out your hair with cold water. The diluted vinegar not only adds shine to your hair but also takes care of any dandruff.

If you have dry hair, a few drops of oil really help to add shine to it. Start by combing your hair with a good quality, wide-toothed comb. Now pour a few drops of jojoba, coconut, olive or grapeseed oil onto your palm. Run your hands through your hair and keep working the oil into your hair with your fingertips. If you are using oil on wet hair you will need a far lesser quantity of it. Keep in mind that a few drops of oil are normally sufficient to coat the entire length of your hair.

Honey is a powerful moisturizer and is known to add shine to your hair. Add a few drops of honey to a bottle of conditioner. Shake the bottle well and then use the conditioner as usual.

Instead of using your usual conditioner, try conditioning your hair with mayonnaise. Make sure you wash it out well. Mayonnaise helps to lock in the moisture along with the natural oils. No wonder it adds shine to your hair!

You can also try making a shampoo using baking soda. Dilute a cup of baking soda with water to make a soft, slightly runny paste. Wet your hair and massage this mixture into the scalp. Rinse the baking soda out thoroughly. Your hair becomes squeaky clean and regains its shine.
