Have you ever heard someone at the salon telling someone else how to care for their hair? I have, and they were hilarious! There must be a million old wives tales about pretty much every subject, and hair care is one subject that isn't immune to these myths.
Here are some that exist...
Washing your hair often causes hair loss or will make it dry.
This one is FALSE! Washing your hair often within reason is ok. The generally accepted recommendation is 3 times a week. Using the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair type is actually good for your hair, and can add moisture, body and strength to your hair.
Using more shampoo will make your hair cleaner.
This one is FALSE! Washing your hair with half a bottle of shampoo is going to do more than waste your shampoo! It is a waste of money as well. Shampoo is not cheap these days, and you will also be adding to the harmful chemicals in waste water that needs to be treated. Usually a small dollop, about the size of a Quarter should do, and if you have very long hair, you can use a little more.
Conditioner will repair your split ends.
This one is FALSE! Conditioner can't bind your split ends together. It isn't glue. What it can do is smooth the cuticle down a little and make it look less damaged. One the other hand, a good conditioner can help strengthen your hair so that split ends don't occur as easily.
Blow drying your hair will cause it to fall out.
This one is FALSE! If your hair dryer is too hot, it can cause your hair to become more brittle and break. This is not falling out, and the hair will continue to grow. It can however appear that your hair is thinning because it is shorter. This is not permanent hair loss. Just use your dryer on a cooler setting.
