Sun on Natural & Color Treated Hair:

If you have your hair colored or bleached, it is important to shield it from the sun. Hair can become very brittle even after 3 days of sun exposure. Blonds will go dull and brassy. Brunettes turn lifeless and orange-like. It is tempting to let the sun give you those natural highlights, but the truth is you are much better off if you have your highlights done in a salon. Once your hair is processed; from perms, color, or straightening it is much more susceptible to sun damage. The cuticle has already been compromised.

To save your hair’s shine and color, the best protection by far is a hat or scarf to physically block UVA and UVB rays. If this isn’t your style, then a sunblock for the hair is a must. You can use body creams with spf in a pinch, but you may not like how it mats the hair down. Certainly better than nothing, however. A dry oil spray with spf will coat the hair, protect it from the sun, moisturize it and keep it from tangling excessively while at the beach or boating. Recommended: Monoi de Tahiti “Impacco D’Olio” a protective hair oil, available from [maretta.com]. Made in Italy- it contains sun filters, to protect color and shine. It coats the hair to keep pool chemicals and salt from attaching to the hair fibre. Meanwhile, this same protective coat smooths the hair and keeps it from tangling. It has moisturizing ingredients: Monoi oil and Vitamin E. It also has a light tropical scent and pretty packaging ($24.00). Talk about multi-tasking! Also, if you are not looking to go so luxe, Frederick Fekkai has a line of suncare for the hair which is very reasonably priced (approx. $13.00) sold through Sephora stores.

Wind in the Hair:

Remember, also, that aside from the sun rays, the wind and sea can cause wrinkles and damage to skin, and the same goes for hair. The last thing you want to be is an “old salt”.

Letting your hair whip around in the wind may look sexy at the time but the damage caused from having to later detangle it, is simply not worth it. Use a plastic hair clip or covered elastic band to secure hair. Try one in the same color as your hair for a more discrete, elegant look. Barettes with metal clasps cause breakage.

Swimming in Sea or Pool water:

Wet your hair with natural water first, this will keep less salt or chlorine from being absorbed by the hair as it has already absorbed its fill. Immediately after swimming rinse the hair again with clean water. Never let your hair dry with pool chemicals or salt on it, which seriously attacks the fibre.

Remember the above tips and you’ll keep your hair looking healthy and shiny into the Fall and Winter. And of course, spare yourself from being called an “Old Salt”.
