Tips to help with THE HAIR

I'm the first to admit that my hair is not the best. Years of abusing it has taken it's toll. Something that was taken for granted has turned into a nightmare of sorts. As we age, so does our hair. The sun, blow drying, coloring, overusing gels can damage the hair. Dyeing it or not, striving for healthy hair is a must. If you choose to dye your hair to match the color your were born with, an eccentric color or let it go gray, none will look good if your hair is unhealthy and dull. So, to make the most of the inevitable-aging hair, here are a few tips to get your hair to be shiny and healthy and to make the most of what you've got. Cutting the hair and letting healthy hair to grow back is sometimes the only solution, either way follow these few steps and see results.

Eat well and take your Omega-3s-To start with, eat well and be sure to make fish and nuts a part of your diet. The omega-3 fatty acids and protein promote stronger and healthier hair. Eat your vegetables, they are a great source for added nutrients.

Avoid fad diets and quick weight loss-If dieting, eat healthy foods and avoid fad diets, which will lead to brittle hair or hair loss due to a deficiency in nutrients. Losing weight takes time and should not happen overnight.

Protect Hair from the Sun-Like your skin, too much sun has damaging effects. It will dry out, especially if it's color treated, so using a light spray with an SPF protection or wearing a hat when the sun is the strongest is a must.

Use lukewarm water-When washing and rinsing the hair, use lukewarm water rather than hot, which will strip the scalp of sebum, the oil that protects the hair and acts as a natural conditioner giving it its shine. Massage the scalp as you wash to promote circulation.

Blow-dry less often-Blow-drying the hair is damaging to the hair, with finer hair being especially sensitive to damage, so keep it at a minimum and when you do blow dry, turn down the heat. Aside from being bad for the hair, frequent blow-drying can also lead to hair loss. Using a conditioner before styling is also a good way of protecting the hair from the damaging effects from blow-drying. Give your hair a break and take time out once in while from styling your hair.

Avoid over moisturizing-One of the most common complaints is thin, lifeless hair. Heavy conditioners will leave the it limp, so use products with silicone which will coat the strands with a thin film, creating fuller and healthier hair.

Use conditioners that contain protein-We get split ends as a result of the damage done by frequent hair styling, coloring, bleaching, or perming which can damage hair's protective outer layer, known as the cuticle. The result is what we call "split ends." Thankfully, there are hair products to help mend the damage. Look for conditioners that contain protein. They actually penetrate the hair shaft and repair split ends. The fix only lasts until the next shampoo, so you'll need to use it regularly.

Go gentle when coloring-As we get older our hair becomes weaker and grows more slowly. Because of this there is longer time between haircuts therefore the color we use to dye it should be more gentle to avoid added damage.

Know your hair-If it suddenly becomes brittle or you are experiencing a sudden loss it could be a sign of a health problem, such as thyroid disease, autoimmune disease or an iron deficiency. If you have any concern than see a doctor.

Trust your judgment-If it takes great effort to get your brush through your hair then use a pick. Forcing the brush will only snap your hair and cause hair loss. If your hair is frizzy and feels dry then give yourself a conditioning treatment. And always, keep in mind that you AND your hair are what you eat so keep it healthy.

Good luck. Before long you'll be getting a compliment on how great your hair looks and that will make mom happy.
