You swim, you run in the early morning air whatever the weather may be, and you take a lot of other steps to optimize your health. A healthy lifestyle has many benefits: including longer life, decrease in overall incidents of disease, better sex life, and the ability to participate in a lot of fun activities.

But in our quest for greater health are we forgetting our hair? The last thing on our list of things to be healthy about is our hair. After all, it goes with us wherever we go and often times have less protection.

Let's take two examples:

Swimming: The chlorine and other powerful chemicals in our pools to make them safe to swim can do a number on the quality of our hair. Chlorine is especially horrible because it penetrates the cuticles and goes into cortex of the hair where the color of your hair lies. It produces a reverse mirror effect absorbing sunlight and bleaching out the color. This might be a nice and even wanted change, but it does not bode well to the health of your hair.

Chlorine also seeps down into your follicles and settles on your scalp, often times drying out the natural oils on your head. Well, this may seem okay, it kicks your sebaceous glands into action and they produce more oil. More oil and the balance of the "micro flora" on your hair seem to spiral out of control. The cause is build up and dandruff. This build up can be disastrous to your hair - not just today but down the road.

You see you hair grows about.01 every day in a place called the "bulb" of your follicle. The poor condition in which your hair grows will lead to poor, dry, brittle hair down the road. The hair produced in this type of environment will be weak and prone to split ends.

Sun or Wind: While the sun is good for a lot of things, such as Vitamin D production, we don't need to tell you that anything - from a CD in your car to your favorite bathing suit, the sun can ruin just about anything. And while, we are getting better at taking precautions with sun block and moisturizers, we don't use these products for our hair. The sun, like any heat application (chemical perms or ironing) can ruin our hair. The heat forces the tightly wrapped cuticles to lift upward forcing a weak point. Millions of weak points can form on a single strand of hair!

Does all this damage mean you can go swimming or spend time outside? No, absolutely not. It just means that we need to take precautions and give our hair the same support we give other parts of our body. After all, we can't leave our hair hanging in the wind and expect it to be in tip top shape.

So, here is what you can do:

For swimming, simply pre-soak your hair. The clean non-chlorinated water will not provide space for the water with the chlorine to penetrate in. After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly and wash it. If you swim often you can create your own anti-chlorine mix by adding about two table spoons of water with regular tap. The vinegar will help remove the calcified deposit let on your hair (if you have more hair use more vinegar).

For damage from the sun: Apply a little sunscreen on your hair. Yes, this works! And it's okay to use especially on those days that you plan on being out in the sun for longer periods of time. Use a hat whenever possible and condition at least twice a week.

Also, if you're expending a lot of energy and nutrients for your muscles due to your active lifestyle, consider taking a hair supplement to increase your optimal level of nutrients for hair production. A fortifying hair supplement can increase the speed of hair production, provide thicker hair, and optimize the color (which is produced in the melanocytes). And provide optimal health to the hair cuticles, which are the millions of scales that consist of your outer hair shaft.
