The first hair rule of summer is protection from the harmful rays of the sun. The sun can dehydrate hair, fade colour and leave your hair feeling brittle and unmanageable. Use a leave-in UV protection product to block out harmful rays and protect your hair. Remember that your hair is affected by the sun everyday, not only when you are lying by the pool or on the beach, so get into the habit of using a UV protection product all the time.

It may also be necessary to add a moisturising treatment to your hair care routine. Try a moisturising masque once or twice a week in place of your conditioner. For an extremely concentrated moisture boost, visit your stylist for an in-salon moisture treatment.

Swimming can be even worse for your hair. Saltwater can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle and Chlorine is a harsh chemical that makes water very hard, causing noticeable dryness to hair. Rinse your hair in freshwater after swimming and, if you can, re-apply your UV protection product.

If you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun, a cap offers the best protection.

SUMMER HAIR PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

1. Your environment in summer can affect your hair colour, causing it to fade faster or lighten.

o The sun can slightly lighten natural colours enhancing gold tones and causing slight brassiness.

o UV rays and Chlorine can deteriorate pigment, stripping colour and causing fading and brassiness

o Exposure to the sun and sea salt lifts the pigments in the hair, slightly lightening natural colour and fading artificial colour.

o Some people are more active in summer and so shampoo their hair more regularly, causing their colour to fade faster.

Your leave-in UV protection product will help to control this, but there are also home care products available which will specifically help to lock the colour in and maintain its vibrancy.

2. Summer brings rain, and it can sometimes be difficult to achieve a smooth blow dry when it's raining and there is a lot of moisture in the air. Applying a leave-in blow drying product will help you to create a smoother look. If your hair is naturally curly, apply a straightening cream before blow drying. This will help the blow-wave to last longer and will also help you to straighten your hair more easily. Concentrate on blow drying the roots and the ends of your hair really well. These are often the areas that get the least attention and cause the hair to loose its sleekness quickly.

After blow-drying, apply a small amount of silicone or anti-humidity product to the mid-lengths and ends to seal them, and help keep them straight and smooth.

3. One of the most common colour problems encountered in summer is that Chlorine can discolour blonde hair. It can cause a chemical reaction that turns both natural & chemically enhanced blondes green.

To remedy this at home, add just a few drops of mercurochrome to water. Dip the hair into the water & watch the colour carefully. You will see the colour change as the red pigment neutralizes the green. Rinse straight away. If you don't have mercurochrome handy, use tomato sauce. The stain of the dye in the tomato sauce neutralises the stain of the chemical reaction.

If you swim often, use a clarifying shampoo to fully remove traces of the chlorine from your hair. You can also help prevent hair from staining by sleeking it back with gel. Silicones and gels will coat the hair and help prevent water from entering the cuticle, so minimizing damage. A swimming cap offers the best protection if you swim really often.
