Your hair ultimately reflects the overall condition of your body. If your body is healthy and well nourished, your hair will be healthy and beautiful.

Health problems and nutritional deficiencies show up in your hair in the form of slow growth or brittleness. Proper care and washing are also vital in preserving your hair.

Hair is dead tissue. Once it is damaged it cannot be repaired, except by re-growing it. The only "living part of a hair" is the root, which is under the skin, called a follicle.

When your hair reaches shoulder length, it represents about two years' growth.

The first part of hair care involves the live part, or the root of the hair. This is the part that is effected by diet and health of the body. This is the "future" of your hair quality.

Your hair is protein, so a diet too low in protein will cause thinning of your hair or lack of growth. If you take in a good amount of protein, your hair will respond with improved growth and strength.

A healthy hair diet includes fish, eggs, beans, yogurt, calves liver, brewers yeast, and wheat germ. Soy is another good source of protein for the hair.

In addition to eating the proper foods that contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals, it is a good idea to supplement daily with the following:

Vitamin C with bioflavonoids - one to two grams daily

Vitamin B-complex - 50 mg. of the major B-vitamins (including folate, biotin and inositol)

Vitamin B-6 - 50 mg. of vitamin B-6

Vitamin E - 400 to 800 IU daily

Beta-Carotene - 10,000 to 15,000 IU of beta-carotene daily

Flaxseed oil - one tbsp daily or one tablet

Beta-Carotene - 10,000 to 15,000 IU of beta-carotene daily

Granulated Lecithin- two tablespoons

The second part of hair care is handling and washing the hair.

Learn to wash your hair without damaging it. Remember, anything past the scalp is essentially dead material, so any damage it receives, cannot be repaired by the body. Your body can only affect new growth.

Wet your hair properly before applying shampoo and only use shampoo according to your hair length, because excess shampoo can actually harm your hair.

Massage shampoo on your scalp to remove the dead skin cells which result often in dandruff.

Rinse your hair well thoroughly to make it sure you have left no shampoo in your hair.

Apply conditioner. This is not applied to the hair roots, but to the ends of the hair. Conditioner is designed to treat the damage already done to the nonliving part of the hair. Leave the conditioner for at least a minute.

Rinse your hair if necessary. Some conditioners are designed to leave on the hair. Check the conditioner you use to see if it is designed to be rinsed off.

Squeeze out as much water as you can from your hair.

Blot your hair with a towel to remove water. Do not rub with the towel. Remember your hair can be damaged by mistreatment so handle it with care. It is better to let your hair air dry as opposed to drying it with a blow dryer. If you use a blow dryer use cool air.

You prevent further damage to your hair, it is imperative that you wash your hair in chemical free water. Most public water supplies are treated with chlorine to control germs. We use it as a matter of course, without thinking much about it. However, even though the dosage is generally more diluted than that in your local swimming pool, it has enough chlorine to damage your hair. Repeated use adds damage upon damage. Chlorine is an oxidizer and it destroys tissue.

Chlorine free water will add tremendously to the vitality and beauty of your hair.
