There is a common belief that black hair doesn't grow very long. Nothing is further from the truth. Excess processing through the use of relaxers and the use of heat for styling weakens the strands causing breakage. However, with the proper African American hair care, the strands can grow to be very long.

Treat Your Hair Gently

In order to get black hair to grow, it is important to reduce breakage. A simple way to do this is to carefully comb your hair. Start at the ends, gently ease your way through the tangles, and work your way up to the roots. Always use a wide tooth comb to reduce the friction. Do not use a brush with hard bristles. This can snap the strands and damage the ends.

Remember That Wet Hair is Fragile

African American hair is more susceptible to breakage when it is wet. Don't brush your hair after shampooing. Gently pat your hair after each washing. Rubbing too hard can cause you to lose extra strands. Apply a good conditioner to your hair while it is still damp. Conditioning is the key to growing African American hair that is strong and healthy. If you really want to protect your hair, leave the conditioner on. You can do this even if it is not a leave-in conditioner.

Be Wary of Knit Caps

Knit caps can cause thinning around the hairline and temples. The strands stick to the cap and then when you pull it off, some of your hair goes with it. The same thing goes for sweaters. Strands that rest on the shoulders will stick to the sweater and can snap when you turn your head. Put your hair in a ponytail or another style that keeps it up off of your neck and shoulders when wearing sweaters. Sleep with a silk night cap to protect your hair at night.

Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize

One sure way to get black hair to grow fast is to make sure that it is properly moisturized. Always apply moisturize to your hair when it is damp. If you do this when your hair is dry, the moisturizing oils will not be adequately absorbed and the strands will still be dry and be likely to break. If you are moisturizing between washings, then sprinkle some water on your hair until it is damp and then put a little coconut oil on it. This will allow the follicles and shaft to absorb the oil.
