People often associate curly hair as being unmanageable and hard to handle. However, with proper care and management, caring for curls of all textures can be hassle free. Here are 5 tips that will help you to manage your hair much more easily.

Water Is A Curls Best Friend

Water should be a primary component of your hair care regime. Why? Because water softens, moisturizes and nourishes by penetrating deeply into the hair shaft. To make daily styling easier, rinse your hair in the shower or bath daily (or every two days). Whilst rinsing (with or without conditioner) use your fingers to rake through your hair to remove any knots or tangles. If your hair is particularly prone to tangling, apply conditioner to wet hair and then detangle using a wide toothed comb or paddle brush.

Avoid Thin Toothed Combs

This brings me to my second tip: never use a thin toothed or narrow comb to detangle curly hair. Because the teeth are narrow and close together, when detangling this can cause the hair to tear which results in excess breakage. The only time you should use a narrow toothed comb is if you have already detangled using a wide toothed comb or padded brush and need a smaller comb to remove extra tangles.

Enhance Curl Definition

There are many ways to enhance the natural curl pattern of your hair. One of the best ways is to scrunch. Scrunching refers to a technique often used by stylists to enhance curl definition and reduce frizz. The best way to scrunch is to apply small amount of a moisturizing lotion or leave in conditioner to your hair from root to tip. Then turn your head towards the ground (it may sound silly but it works by helping to elongate your curls). In the same way you'd scrunch a piece of paper, scrunch your hair to define its natural curl pattern.

Go SLS Free

SLS which stands for Sodium Lauryl or Laureth Sulphate, is a strong detergent used for cleansing products such as dishes, cutlery, pots and pans. It is arguably the most common ingredient found in commercial hair shampoos. So why is SLS bad for curly hair? Curly hair is prone to dryness because it has fewer cuticle layers than straight hair; SLS therefore causes problems because it over cleans curly hair and subsequently causes dryness and breakage.

Leave Flat Irons Alone

There is nothing wrong with straightening your curls, after all we all love to change our look sometimes. However, flat ironing your hair on a daily or even weekly basis is likely to cause split ends and breakage. Regularly using a flat iron on your hair will weaken your tresses by damaging the hairs cuticle layers. Instead of straightening daily or weekly why not try using rollers or flexi-rods to switch up your style without extra heat.

Incorporating these techniques will help you to take better care of your hair especially if you are looking to have stronger more beautiful hair. Regardless of how curly your hair is, these techniques can be added to your hair regime and will make styling so much easier.
